Adam & Eve

I’m going to guess that you know who I’m talking about what I say Adam and Eve.  Who were they? They were the very first people that God created after making the world!  They were the first husband and wife, the first father and mother, and the first people to sin.

This week we’re going to find out more about Adam and Eve and what their roles were supposed to be, their relationship with God, what their sin meant for them and means for us, and how their story connects to Jesus.  Can you look ahead of time for some of that?  Try looking it up in the book of Genesis in the Bible.  It’s the very first book.

Adam and Eve are just the beginning of a great story, one that takes many pages, many authors, and 66 books to tell.  The Bible is exciting from beginning to end, and it all starts with Adam and Eve.

Are you ready?  Let’s review 1 Corinthians 15:22 today: “For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. “

Temptation and sin

Yeah, Adam and Eve had it made in the Garden of Eden.  They were in charge of all the animals, they got to walk and talk with God, and they could eat anything they wanted, except for the fruit of one tree.  But the first humans made a choice to go against God, and they lost everything they had.

Why did Adam and his wife choose to disobey God?  Why would anyone give up the perfect life they had just to eat a piece of fruit?  The reason is because they were tempted to sin and they gave in to that temptation.  Do you know what it means to be tempted?  The serpent in the garden convinced Eve that it was okay to eat the fruit even though God had said not to.  That’s usually what happens when we’re tempted to do something.  We find a way to make it seem like it’s not a sin.

While God had told them that eating the fruit of the tree He said not to eat from would make them die (Genesis 2:17), it didn’t seem like they died after they  ate it.  What happened though, was that they died to the lives they once had.  While they probably would have gone on to never die, no matter how long they lived, they eventually grew old and they did die.  Adam and Eve’s sin also brought sin into the world for everyone else, even you and me. Read the rest of that story in Genesis 3.

Let’s finish this week strong with memorizing Genesis 3:20 “The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.”

Friends with God

Adam and Eve had a relationship with God that no one has had since their time.  We’ll talk to tomorrow about why that is.  Back in the Garden of Eden, God would come down to visit with the people He first created (Genesis 3:8) and talk to them as His friends .

Can you imagine that?  What if God came to your house and just talked to you about stuff in your life?  What would you want to talk to Him about?  What do you think Adam and Eve talked to Him about?  Why do you think He visited with them?  He wasn’t doing that with the animals!

The Lord spent time with Adam and Eve because He loved them and cared about them.  Humans were the most special of all His creation and He wanted to speak to them, teach them, and help them.  He wants to speak to you too.  Do you know how He does that now?  He tells us what we need to know in the Bible!

So, things were perfect in the garden and Adam and Eve had a friendship with God unlike anything else.  They had everything they could ever need.  But something terrible happened that hurt their friendship with God and ruined what they had going…

Keep memorizing Genesis 3:20 “The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.”

Taking care of the earth

God gave Adam a very special job.  Adam got to name all of the animals that were created (Genesis 2:19), and take care of all of the beautiful place God gave him.  In this Garden of Eden, things were good, but God said they were not good enough until Adam had a helper.  Once Eve was created, things were as they should be.

Adam and Eve didn’t have to work hard in the garden to get the trees to produce fruit because the earth was still perfect at that time.  It never even needed to rain because God made water come out of the ground to make the plants grow.  Even though work wasn’t hard for the first humans, God gave them a job to do.

You were created with a purpose too.  You have a job to do that was given to you by God. It’s your own special calling, just like Adam and Eve had.  Jesus had His own special task on the earth too.  Do you know what it was?

Keep up the great work memorizing verses!  Genesis 3:20 “The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.”

Created in God’s image

God created everything from the earth and night and day to the animals and plants that are on the earth.  Then, on a very special day, he created Adam and Eve, the first humans.  Humans are quite different from the other animals and that’s why God made them on their own special day.  Some of the things that are true about God are true about humans, because we’re made in His image.

Adam and Eve could do all sorts of things that animals couldn’t do.  They were able to think in much greater ways than animals, able to speak, able to worship God, and even able to be God’s friend.  Nothing else that God created was able to have these things be true about them.

God wanted Adam and Eve to help each other.  First, He had made Adam only (Genesis 2:7), but He decided that Adam needed a helper and friend, so He made Eve (Genesis 2:18). Adam and his wife walked in the garden together, took care of the animals and plants, and even got to spend time with God.  They were special, unlike all the rest of creation, because they (and you) were made in God’s image.

Here’s the next verse to memorize:  Genesis 3:20 “The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.”
